RESUMO

Health research increasingly requires effective ways to identify existing datasets and assess their suitability for research. We sought to test whether researchers could use an existing metadata catalogue to assess the suitability of datasets for addressing specified research questions. Five datasets were described in the National Institute for Health Research Health Informatics Collaborative metadata catalogue, and for each dataset five associated research questions were formulated, some of which were answerable with the dataset while others were not. Thirteen researchers each assessed whether the ten questions associated with two randomly selected datasets were answerable with the described datasets. After removing instances where participants misunderstood the question or lacked subject matter knowledge to make the assessment, we found that 87 out of 109 assessments (80%) were correct. Participants particularly struggled with one dataset which consisted of EHR data. The most common reason for incorrect assessments was the inability to find the relevant information in the metadata catalogue.

RESUMO

Termites are an insect group relevant for recycling of organic matter, but they are also biodeteriogenic and may cause serious damages to wooden structures (including historical buildings and ancient libraries) in anthropogenic environments. The collection of Italian and foreign termites gathered over the years by Antonio Springhetti, Professor of Zoology at the University of Ferrara (Ferrara, Italy) and internationally renowned entomologist, contains over 44,000 specimens, collected by Springhetti during his field campaigns or donated by other entomologists from all over the world. The collection is currently preserved at the Department of Life Sciences and Biotechnology of the University of Ferrara. Unfortunately, all documents, publications and notes concerning the Springhetti Collection were lost; thus, in 2020, the collection was completely re-catalogued within the University Museum System and analyzed in detail. The collection contains specimens dating back to 1878 and represents not only a valuable scientific tool for studies on these ecologically relevant insects that may cause damages to historical buildings, ancient books and artworks but also an important cultural asset for the University Museum System.

RESUMO

Schwann cells (SCs) are essential in the production of the axon-wrapping myelin sheath and provide trophic function and repair mechanisms in the peripheral nerves. Consequently, well-characterized SC in vitro models are needed to perform preclinical studies including the investigation of the complex biochemical adaptations occurring in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) under different (patho)physiological conditions. MSC80 cells represent a murine SC line used as an in vitro system for neuropathological studies. Here, we introduce the most abundant 9532 proteins identified via mass spectrometry-based protein analytics, and thus provide the most comprehensive SC protein catalogue published thus far. We cover proteins causative for inherited neuropathies and demonstrate that in addition to cytoplasmic, nuclear and mitochondrial proteins and others belonging to the protein processing machinery are very well covered. Moreover, we address the suitability of MSC80 to examine the molecular effect of a drug-treatment by analyzing the proteomic signature of Vitamin C-treated cells. Proteomic findings, immunocytochemistry, immunoblotting and functional experiments support the concept of a beneficial role of Vitamin C on oxidative stress and identified TMX1 as an oxidative stress protective factor, which might represent a promising avenue for therapeutic intervention of PNS-disorders with oxidative stress burden such as diabetic neuropathy.

The report analyses some useful remarks for the implementation and accomplishment of cataloging projects by descriptors, about the information that is inside documents in consultations and answers series of current public archives. These ideas are tackled by a systemic approach. After explaining the first results gained in the project by Pons Seguridad Vial society inside a Spanish Public Administration, the report concludes with the importance of differentiating the key information inside the vast informative volume of an institution. Thus the efficiency prevails in information retrieval and the speed takes priority over reuse of information. The relevance and the potential of consultations series in current archives are emphasized for the implementation of these kind of projects, that they should not replace regular archival processing.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: To help physicians and radiologists in the diagnosis of female genito-urinary malformations, especially of complex cases, the embryology of the female genital tract, the basis for Müllerian development anomalies, the current classifications for such anomalies and the comparison for inclusion and cataloguing of female genital malformations are briefly reviewed. The use of the embryological system to catalogue female genito-urinary malformations may ultimately be more useful in correlations with clinical presentations and in helping with the appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Diagnostic imaging of the different genito-urinary anomalies are exposed, placing particular emphasis on the anomalies within group II of the embryological and clinical classification (distal mesonephric anomalies), all of them associated with unilateral renal agenesis or dysplasia. Similarly, emphasis is placed on cases of cervico-vaginal agenesis, cavitated noncommunicated uterine horns, and cloacal and urogenital sinus anomalies and malformative combinations, all of them complex malformations. Diagnostic imaging for all these anomalies is essential. The best imaging tools and when to evaluate for other anomalies are also analysed in this review. TEACHING POINTS: • The appropriate cataloguing of female genital malformations is controversial. • An embryological classification system suggests the best diagnosis and appropriate management. • The anomalies most frequently diagnosed incorrectly are the distal mesonephric anomalies (DMAs). • DMAs are associated with unilateral renal agenesis or renal dysplasia with ectopic ureter. • We analyse other complex malformations. Diagnostic imaging for these anomalies is essential.

The introduction of new technologies has brought about changes in analytical-synthetic processing, one of the stages in the life cycle of information. Most librarians in the network of medical libraries are graduates in cultural and educational studies, and are not sufficiently familiar with the Medical Sciences Information System. A diagnosis of their needs showed that their training in analytical-synthetic processing is not adequate. Bearing in mind that personnel from the network should be ready to ensure the quality of services, we propose to develop a software supporting the training of librarians in analytical-synthetic processing of information in the network of medical libraries of Villa Clara. The diagnosis was based on qualitative methods and techniques as well as some quantitative resources making it possible to understand the current status of the network of medical libraries and determine the contents to be included. The software is structured into five topics, and a friendly interface enables users to easily move about their areas of interest at any moment. Implementation of the software will provide librarians with a source of information related to the knowledge and techniques required for the appropriate analytical-synthetic processing of information, as well as a tool for consultation and support to professional development and research activities(AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Catalog and Index of French-language Health Internet resources (CISMeF) is a quality-controlled health gateway, primarily for Web resources in French (n=89,751). Recently, we achieved a major improvement in the structure of the catalogue by setting-up multiple terminologies, based on twelve health terminologies available in French, to overcome the potential weakness of the MeSH thesaurus, which is the main and pivotal terminology we use for indexing and retrieval since 1995. The main aim of this study was to estimate the added-value of exploiting several terminologies and their semantic relationships to improve Web resource indexing and retrieval in CISMeF, in order to provide additional health resources which meet the users' expectations. METHODS: Twelve terminologies were integrated into the CISMeF information system to set up multiple-terminologies indexing and retrieval. The same sets of thirty queries were run: (i) by exploiting the hierarchical structure of the MeSH, and (ii) by exploiting the additional twelve terminologies and their semantic links. The two search modes were evaluated and compared. RESULTS: The overall coverage of the multiple-terminologies search mode was improved by comparison to the coverage of using the MeSH (16,283 vs. 14,159) (+15%). These additional findings were estimated at 56.6% relevant results, 24.7% intermediate results and 18.7% irrelevant. CONCLUSION: The multiple-terminologies approach improved information retrieval. These results suggest that integrating additional health terminologies was able to improve recall. Since performing the study, 21 other terminologies have been added which should enable us to make broader studies in multiple-terminologies information retrieval.
